[May. 27th, 2006|07:17 am] |
hello my adorable flist. a little bird told me that some of you wished me happy birthday here, and since i haven't posted in, oh, a squillion, i'd say that's a remarkable testament to the generosity and good will of the lj community, or at least to the functionality of the birthday notifier.
i'd like to send birthday wishes to everyone who had a birthday in the last 10 months, with special shout outs to my fellow geminis herself_nyc, writteninstars and today's bday girl, flowery_twat!
what i did with my lj vacation: hint: it has two legs, opposable thumbs and lots of drool.
i miss you guys lots. heart heart heart!

| | Dirty Work - Steely Dan | ] | I was in the East Village at lunchtime, walking from an appointment on 4th and D to the 2nd Ave. subway. My usual pit stop when I take the subway there is a little French lunch counter/cafe called Le Kiosk, which sits smack in the middle a scrubby little park on Houston and 1st lined with benches, which are lined with junkies and alcoholics. From their tiny restaurant, which looks like a converted mobile home, they serve fresh delicious sandwiches, like my fave - sprouts, tomato, avocado and olive oil on nutty brown bread - and homemade iced tea and lemonade and fresh banana chocolate swirl cake. But today I didn't go to Le Kiosk because another place caught my eye as I was crossing Ave. B at 3rd St - a tiny little storefront no bigger than a ticket window called Dragon Snack. It wasn't even really a store on its own - more an appendage to the bodega behind it and jutting out awkwardly onto the sidewalk. I wondered what they would serve. I thought maybe dumplings or lo mein. But when I walked up to the window, there was no menu, just a pleasant-looking woman, gray hair tied back in a ponytail, standing in front of a couple of hotplates and a high shelf holding an espresso maker and other kitchen appliances. I asked her what she was serving today. Egg salad or thigh-meat chicken on a bun, and cold drinks - iced tea, coffee or chai. I debated a bit, because I love egg salad, but I went for the chicken, which she prepared fresh as I waited. She pulled a nice pink cutlet out of her tiny fridge and dredged it in bread crumbs, then set it in a teeny frying pan on the hot plate. It's really hot today - feels worse because of the humidity -so I could imagine how close it must've felt for her in the snack shack. But she was so nice. We talked about chicken, and how much we prefer thigh meat to breast, and her egg salad recipe, which she let me taste. It was delicious. She makes it with radish, Bermuda onion, dry mustard and mayo. When the chicken was done she toasted a little hamburger bun in a separate teeny pan, set it on a paper plate, placed the chicken on one side and a smear of mayo on the other with a juicy red tomato slice on top. Put it together. And voila. Best sandwich I've ever had. |

If you had to recommend one m/m slash fic, not an obvious classic, but something written in the last 6 months or so, schmoop or angst or PWP, the only qualification being that it is without a doubt the HOTTEST thing you've read in recent memory, what would it be? Any fandom, any pairing. WIPs and RPS okay.
I thank you. |

| Not American? No probalo! |
[Jun. 14th, 2005|04:59 pm] |
Ahem. It's come to our attention that certain countries who are not America do not celebrate the 4th of July, and therefore citizens of these sad nation-states will not be able to participate in the Spander 5K, since July 4 falls on a Monday. And so in the interest of serving humanity and spreading our mission of gay vampire road races throughout the world, we are invading your lands allowing non-Yanks to run the 5K on an alternate day of their choice. Please just stop by spander5k and let us know when and where.
God bless. |

I got up at 7 this morning and ran for 20 minutes as part of my new training regimen for the spander5k. I figure if I do that every other day, I might be able to run 3.1 miles on July 4 without collapsing in the dust.
There are hidden benefits to getting out and running around the streets of your neighborhood early in the morning. For one thing, you might see a tiny Bush flag poking out of a small piece of dog poop. Like so:
Bush poo flag
I'd heard about this prank, which started in Germany and has been driving the cops there crazy, apparently, but this is the first poo flag I've seen or heard of in NYC. Anyone else had a sighting? |

[Jun. 12th, 2005|03:45 pm] |
Hey y'all. Those of you not reading jolielaide's LJ may not know that the second annual Spander 5k is only three weeks away. What does Spander have to do with running, you might ask. Not much. But last year we made race shirts with a s/x manip and a pun about rimming. And that isn't wrong.
Anyone is welcome. Racers are not required to enjoy or be good at running. Take me for example. I run like an old man. When I ran the first annual sp5k last year with flowery_twat and jolielaide, I ate their dust for half a mile then didn't see them for like an hour. But the point wasn't winning, it was finishing. And that felt pretty good. Okay, here's a way Spander is like running a race, if you're me. Running is like writing fanfic. It's slow and painful and makes you want to die, but you're always glad you did it. If you want to participate but don't want to run, you can walk, crawl or hippity-hop. The only requirement is that you finish the 5k in under, say, 24 hours.
Here's the 411, cribbed from jolielaide's journal. And if you're interested, we've set up a community for the race: spander5k. So please: join us. Just Do It. For Spander.
